Job description

You could be the most ideal candidate for a particular job and have a CV full of experience and impressive job positions but no one will employ you if you can't impress during the critical time of a job interview. So what are the main points that you need to keep in mind when it comes to being a successful interviewee? Well to help you I have complied this list of the ten top tips for you to find success in your interview, regardless of the job position you have applied for, so read on...

Dress to Impress

Before you even get to your interview you need to ensure that you are ready for it. One way in which this is achieved is by dressing appropriately. Your appearance is the first impression your potential employer will have of you so you need to ensure it is a good one!

The way you dress acts as a reflection on the type of person you are so turning up looking as though you haven't made an effort will make a potential employer think you won't put any effort into your work.

Be Punctual

Turn up late to your interview and you might as well not turn up at all. It is so important that you are on time; in fact it's even better to be a bit early by ten or fifteen minutes. This gives you the perfect amount of time to correctly compose yourself and inform the correct person that you have arrived.

Arriving slightly early is also great in case there are any forms etc for you to fill in as this means your interviewer isn't sitting around waiting for you to do this, meaning you can put more thought and detail into it.

Bring the correct Information and Documents

For some job interviews you may be informed of certain pieces of information that you need to bring with you. These pieces of information could be documentation in the form of your CV and a portfolio of work as well as your driving license. Even if you aren't asked to take any of these with you it is always a good idea to have them as it is better to take too much as oppose to nothing at all.

Come across friendly and Enthusiastic

I know that during the process you will be nervous and sometimes these nerves will get the better of you but it is vital that you give off the right vibes. No one would offer a job to someone who came across as not knowing anything about the company and not being interested in and enthusiastic about what it is that you would be doing as part of the company.

You need to present yourself as friendly, approachable, confident and interested and enthusiastic as that is what employers look for in employees and failure to conduct yourself in such a manner could cost you the job you are trying to get.

Be Flexible

Basically you need to ensure that what you say in your interview doesn't contradict anything that is stated within your CV. You also need to be clear on your job objectives such as progression and the different roles you want to play in a company. You need to make yourself available rather than restrict what you are capable of as most employers will opt for someone who is flexible in the job role as oppose to someone who has simply pigeon hold themselves to a particular title.

Sell yourself with your Strengths

When a potential employer questions you about your strengths, the response that they don't want to receive is a lengthy silence while you try and think of some because if you don't even see your strengths how is a potential employer suppose to? Make sure you emphasis your strengths that are related to the job position you are going for and give examples of how you have demonstrated these strengths in previous roles.

Be honest with your Weaknesses

We all have flaws and what yours are is something that a potential employer will be interested in finding out. This doesn't mean you have to reel off a list of your mistakes but more of an example of something you can improve on. For instance you may not be great at selling but as long as you can demonstrate how you are going about dealing with this to improve your skills your potential employer shouldn't hold it against you.

Ask Questions

Questions such as is there room for progression? Do you provide any training? And what is the dress code? Are all questions that will demonstrate to the employer that you are interested in the position and the job is one you could see yourself doing for a good length of time.

Know your Goals

One of the main questions that feature in interviews, regardless of the job is where do you see yourself in five years? The answer that you give to this question depends on the industry you are looking for work in. however the principle of it is to keep your answer flexible as this demonstrates you understand the complexities of the business you're applying for.

Understand what not to do

Just as you need to understand what to do in an interview you also need to know what not to do. Don't have a negative attitude, don't demonstrate an inability to express information clearly and don't complete any documents in a messy or rushed manner.

Keeping tips such as the above in mind puts you in a good position when it comes to being accepted for a job, so keep them in mind next time you have an interview, they could be just the thing to secure your job.
